Protect your property – and your health

DAMP can cause problems like dry and wet rot and mould which can seriously affect the structure of a property – and your health.
In many buildings the problem occurs because of condensation, rain getting in or rising damp.

Unwanted moisture enables the growth of various types of fungi. Moulds can grow on any surface and occur where there is moisture from structural problems like leaky roofs or high levels of humidity.
Airborne mould concentrations can cause respiratory problems.
If you think you have a damp problem it’s important to address the issue quickly. Signs of damp are usually – but not always - easy to spot.

Damp will cause plaster and paint to deteriorate and will loosen wallpaper. Stains from water, salts and mould will damage surfaces. In extreme cases, mortar or plaster may fall away from the affected wall.

Don’t let the damp come back

When rising damp occurs, water is absorbed into walls leaving deposits of hygroscopic salts, which attract moisture into the brickwork and plaster.

Despite an effective damp proof course being installed, these salts can absorb moisture from the air giving the impression of continued dampness.

In order to avoid this problem, it is essential that the affected plaster be hacked off and the area is re-plastered with a rendering additive that will neutralise the salts.

How to spot rising damp

Rising damp in a wall structure is where there is higher moisture content at the base of the wall which rises up the wall. If you spot rising damp in your home make sure you act fast to contain possible structural damage and keep your home free of dangerous airborne mould.
These are the tell-tale signs:

Damaged internal decoration – damp, discoloured tidemarks on paint and wallpaper.

Damaged plaster – blistering, salting and falling apart .

Rotting skirting boards, floor timbers – wet rot decay.

Localised dampness – dampness on walls rarely rises more than a metre above ground level but may go much higher in extreme cases.

Causes of Rising Damp

  • No damp proof course
  • Existing damp proof course breaking down
  • External ground level being higher than internal floor level bridging existing damp proof course
  • A build-up of rubble or mortar inside a cavity wall causing bridging of damp proof course
  • Internal plaster work bridging an existing damp proof course
  • Enduring damp at the base of the wall due to previous water penetration
  • Condensation at the base of a wall because of inadequate ventilation
  • Defective or leaking water pipes
